Directorate
Africa Health Organisation (AHO)'s Community Care Directorate comprises of work in the fields of: Children Adults Older People Disability Mental Health HIV/AIDS Meals on Wheels In countries with social security, community care services are care services that are usually arranged or provided by the local authority social services department to individuals who have care needs. The services include a place in a care home or services to help people carry on living in their homes. People need community care services because of many reasons such as age, disablity, physically or mentally illness. AHO aims to help Africans maintain in their own homes wherever possible, rather than receive care in a long -stay institution or residential establishment as this helps them keep as much independence as possible.
There is a wide range of community care services that you may be entitled to. The following list gives only the main examples:
Care homes Although not the best option to provide care for our beloved ones, care homes may be an option if someone need long-term care, if they can’t manage in their own home anymore. The care provided include help with washing, dressing or going to the toilet. Some care homes can also provide nursing care. AHO staff will support you or refer you to specialist advisers such as CAB for more information about care homes, including fees and charges. Home care services AHO has trained staff to provide home care services or personal tasks such as bathing and washing, getting up and going to bed, shopping and managing finances. AHO will agree with you for someone to come to your home at agreed times like two or three times a day or even 24-hour care where necessary. Home helps AHO has also trained staff in home helps that provide assistance with general domestic tasks including cleaning and cooking and may be particularly important in maintaining hygiene in the home. Adaptations to the home AHO could help you with adaptations to the home. That could be major or minor and can be particularly important in allowing you to remain at home. Major adaptations could include, for example, the installation of a stair lift or downstairs lavatory or the lowering of work tops in the kitchen. Minor adaptations would include, for example, hand rails in the bathroom. Meals AHO can help with the provision of meals delivered either daily, in some areas, the delivery of a weekly or monthly supply of frozen food. AHO is developing community centres so that meals could be provided at a day centre or lunch club. Recreational and occupational activities AHO works with local authority social services department to provide a range of recreational, occupational, educational and cultural activities. These activities include games, outings, and help with living skills and budgeting, radio, television, visits and transport to enable people to make use of the facilities.
