African Young Carers Programme

African Young Carers group is a service user group, led by young Carers for Carers. Young Carers are at the heart of all our work, shaping our work and helping get our message across.
Many young people are caring for an elderly relative, a sick friend or a disabled family member. They do it unpaid and often without support. African young Carers Group is the voice of young carers. Our aim is to improve the lives of young Carers by providing information, advice, support and by campaigning for equal access to statutory service.

Young Carers give so much to society yet as a consequence of caring, they experience ill health, poverty and discrimination.

At African Young Carers Group we fight to end inequality and isolation of young Carers. We will work with other young Carers groups to campaign for the recognition of true value of young carers’ contribution to society and young carers get the practical, financial and emotional support they need.

In a recent survey, most of our young Carers said that they feel rewarding doing caring responsibilities, but caring can also be very tiring, placing demands on Carer's physical and emotional health. Africa Health Organisation works with Carers Group to ensure Carers health and assessment of needs. We provide the following services to young Carers:

  • School work, homework
  • Financial help
  • Help with caring
  • Finding help
  • Short breaks and respite
  • Caring for pension
  • Direct payments
  • Work and caring
  • Help with health and social care
  • Carers and learning and driving lessons fund
