Africa Parenting Programme

The parenting programme is at the heart of African families values, traditions, beliefs and practices. Through the African family, Africa Health Organisation is able to achieve its aims, goals and objectives. The parenting group is run by parents for parents and ensures that the programme is on track.

The group is a drop-in for parents with children under 60 months of age. It is divided into toddlers (under 12 months) and children over 12 months but under 60 months.

The toddlers group aims to improve the lives of mothers and babies and compliments the Maternal Health programme which provides support to mothers and newly born and unborn babies. The toddlers group is the starting point for instilling African values, customs, beliefs and traditions.

The aims of the group are:

• To provide a safe and stimulating environment for the children to develop

• To reduce social isolation by providing a comfortable environment where people can make new friends and form new support networks in an informal setting.

• To provide health information and family support

Each week a health visitor and nursery nurse are present at the group and are able to provide advice, information and support both in a group and one to one setting on subjects such as:

• Infant feeding

• Managing minor ailments

• Baby massage, baby first aid and resuscitation

• Play and development

• Stress management

• Health lifestyles

• Maternal health

• Maintaining African family model

Apart from activities shown above, the group also instils African family values in families living in the Diaspora, where they often clash with 'foreign' family values. The group also encourages and organises different families from different cultures to meet and share their values .
