Welcome to Africa Health Organisation

Africa Health Organisation (AHO) is an African grassroots international health organisation founded in 2010 with the aim to revolutionise health and social care that is fit for the needs of all African people.

AHO achieves this through health redesign and social innovation. Africa's health service needs radical reform and massive infrastructure of its systems. "African people face disadvantages and severe inequality in health and social care especially in the Diaspora." (Lara, left). Hence AHO tackles health issues in Africa and in the Diaspora.

Thank you for visiting our website, however, the website is under construction.

Managing HIV-infected healthcare workers

Some countries restrict HIV-infected healthcare workers from performing clinical procedures, known as “exposure prone procedures” to protect patients from the risk of infection. Other countries do not have policy or decide on case by case basis. Such procedures, which occur mainly in specialties such as surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, dentistry and some aspects of midwifery and specialist nursing, carry a risk that the healthcare worker could injure themselves and bleed into the patient’s open tissues, with a consequent risk of infection. There have only been four reported cases of transmissions of HIV from infected and untreated healthcare workers although there are doubts of such figures due to lack of collection of data in poor countries with high infection rates. UK is one of the few countries that restricts HIV-infected healthcare workers and is currently consulting on relaxing such restrictions. To what extent do you agree with restricting HIV-infected healthcare workers from performing "exposure prone procedures?"

Take part in the consultation on managing HIV-infected healthcare workers.
